Free Usability Testing - The Mom Test

by admin on May 19, 2009

So I’ve become an avid follower of the Google Website Optimizer blog.  I really love this tool and the possibilities it opens up to every small business website owner out there - there’s really no reason NOT to test the pages on your site - the tool is free and if you built your site on wordpress - well lets just say you’re in good shape for doing some great tests without needing constant help from your webmaster.  If you’re interested in learning more about this process let me know in the comments - I think I’m going to post a how to guide - somewhere - on how to run Website Optimizer tests with a WordPress blog.  I had to run a bunch of trials and errors because there were some programming/script issues.

But I digress - my real reason for posting was to give you all a heads up on how to do the “Mom Test” on your website.  This post at the Website Optimizer blog is really insightful and gives you an idea for doing some live testing of the ease of use on your site.

Let mom do it.

Check out the post for more info - but the gist of it is - watch someone who is not familiar with your site - or very familiar with the internet browse and buy something.  Dont talk to them or guide them in any way - just watch.  Where are the roadblocks?  Make notes and then ask - what can I do to make “x” better when they’re all done.

Thanks for sharing info about the Google Website Optimizer blog. I hadn’t heard about it and will have to check it out. I’d love to hear about more and see your how-to guide. There are so many great tools out there but so little time to really understand them all and put them to good use.
